A Seat on a poetic Stage: Experiencing WAT WE DOEN - Denkend aan Holland at Theatre Zuidplein

I went to see a play at Theatre Zuidplein in Rotterdam called WAT WE DOEN - Denkend aan Holland, and I’m still thinking about it.

The story follows a refugee who arrives in the Netherlands with a dream of becoming a writer. While trying to build a future in his field, he’s stuck in the reality of waiting for residence papers, navigating bureaucracy, and trying to be understood in a country that isn’t always welcoming.

But what truly makes this play unique is the setup: the audience sits on stage. You're not watching from a distance you’re inside the story. It feels like sitting front row at a concert, or even better, like being in the VIP section of someone’s life. Actor George Tobal guides you through a poetic journey filled with humor, sadness, and raw honesty.

More Than a Story It’s a Mirror

In times like these, when conversations around migration are often political and cold, this play makes it human again. It shows what it really means to leave your home, your loved ones, and everything familiar behind not for luxury, but for survival. It exposes the loneliness, the struggle to fit into Dutch culture, and the constant feeling of being misunderstood.

As someone whose parents were immigrants, so much of it hit close to home. There were moments when I felt emotional and seen in a way I didn’t expect. I recognized the exhaustion, the resilience, and the silent hope.

Why Everyone Should See It

Being judged whether by white people or anyone who can’t understand your struggle can leave lifelong scars. This play doesn’t just tell you that; it makes you feel it. And in doing so, it reminds us of something powerful:

Refugees don’t need our judgment. They need our compassion.

WAT WE DOEN - Denkend aan Holland isn’t just a play you watch. It’s an experience that stays with you.

If you ever get the chance to see it go. Let it change the way you look at the world.

The play was written by: Floris van Delft.

Actor played by: George Tobal.
